How does the brain function relate to posture?

Is there a correlation between posture and brain function (cognition)?

In this study in nature the research tried to link forward head posture and brain function. Foward head posture happens in the sagittal plane.

There are three cardinal planes:

Frontal: The frontal plane divides the body into front and back halves as it passes side to side (shoulder to shoulder).

Transverse: The transverse plane divides the body into top and bottom as it passes perpendicular to the long axis of the body.

Sagittal: The sagittal plane divides the body into right-hand and left-hand sides as it passes front (toe side) to back (heel side).

Head posture

A mass survey of citizens aged 50 to 89 years examined whether cognitive decline could be detected by sagittal spinal balance measurement based on a radiological approach.

When viewed from the side, the more the head and neck protrude in front of the pelvis, the more likely subjects are to show symptoms of mild cognitive decline.

What are the two functions of Muscles?

While it’s evident that the primary role of muscles is movement, their significance extends far beyond that. Our muscles play a pivotal role in metabolism, the intricate process through which our bodies convert the food and beverages we consume into energy. During this process, calories are combined with oxygen to produce the energy essential for bodily functions.

Muscle holds a substantial role in glucose (sugar) metabolism, with a staggering 75-80% of our glucose storage capacity residing within skeletal muscle. This aspect is crucial as muscles require ample glucose to function optimally. Moreover, muscles serve as a primary site for insulin activity, facilitating the regulation of blood sugar levels. Additionally, muscles contribute significantly to lipid (fat) utilization, aiding in the management of fat stores in the body.

Maintaining healthy blood glucose levels is imperative as high levels can lead to detrimental effects on various bodily tissues, from the eyes to the extremities. Therefore, preserving muscle mass as we age is paramount for promoting a prolonged health span—the period of life characterized by overall good health. It’s worth noting that beyond the age of 65, most individuals face health issues related to immobility, such as falls, fractures, and subsequent hospitalizations.

Engaging in physical activity, particularly a combination of cardiovascular exercise and strength training, is essential for preserving muscle mass and overall health. I categorize exercise into two main buckets: cardiovascular activities and strength training/muscle-building exercises. Both are indispensable for maintaining optimal health.

The aging process inevitably leads to the loss of muscle mass and strength. Studies indicate a significant decline in muscle strength from individuals aged under 40 to those over 40, ranging from 16.6% to 40.9%. Hence, it’s imperative to incorporate regular workouts and weightlifting into our routines to preserve muscle mass as we age.

In summary, cardiovascular exercise and strength training are integral components of a comprehensive fitness regimen. Together, they offer a myriad of benefits that contribute to overall health and well-being, ensuring vitality and longevity as we journey through life.

  1. Cardiovascular Exercise:
    • Heart Health: Cardiovascular exercises such as running, swimming, cycling, and brisk walking strengthen the heart muscle, improve circulation, and increase the efficiency of the cardiovascular system. Regular cardio workouts can lower blood pressure, reduce LDL cholesterol levels, and decrease the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions.
    • Weight Management: Cardio exercises burn calories and help create a calorie deficit, making them effective for weight loss and weight management. Regular aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, improve cognitive function, and enhance sleep quality, leading to better mental health and emotional resilience

    • Muscle Strength and Function: Strength training exercises, such as weightlifting, resistance band workouts, and bodyweight exercises, target specific muscle groups to increase strength, power, and muscular endurance.     • Bone Health: Resistance training places stress on bones, which stimulates the production of new bone tissue and increases bone density. This is especially important for reducing the risk of osteoporosis and preventing fractures, particularly as individuals age.
    • Metabolic Health: Strength training boosts metabolism by increasing lean muscle mass, which helps burn more calories at rest and improves insulin sensitivity. This can aid in weight management, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, and support long-term metabolic health.
    • Injury Prevention: Strengthening muscles, tendons, and ligaments through resistance training can help prevent injuries by improving joint stability, mobility, and proprioception. Stronger muscles provide better support and protection for the joints, reducing the risk of strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal injuries.

I’ve Fallen and I CAN Get Up


Are you living alone? If you were to fall, would you be able to get back up? The following videos will demonstrate techniques to help you regain your footing if you fall and find yourself without assistance.

Getting up off the floor can be done using a practical approach.


If you lived through the ’80s and ’90s, you might recall those medical alert commercials featuring an elderly woman who calls for assistance because she’s unable to get up after a fall.

The challenge of performing floor-to-stand transitions becomes especially concerning with age, particularly after a fall, where nearly 50% of individuals aged over 70 find themselves unable to stand up independently. What’s notable is that a significant portion of those who fall don’t sustain injuries; rather, they struggle with the task of getting back up on their own.

For individuals residing alone, such circumstances can lead to dire outcomes. Staying on the floor for an extended period can lead to dehydration, pressure ulcers, delirium, rhabdomyolysis, and ultimately, renal failure. In a study involving 125 individuals aged over 65 who experienced falls in their residences, it was found that half of those who remained unable to get up for more than an hour (referred to as “long lies”) had passed away within six months.

Considering the severe outcomes linked with prolonged periods of being immobile on the floor, healthcare providers ought to assess floor-to-stand transition times for individuals aged 50 and above. It is recommended that individuals in their 50s should ideally be capable of standing up from the floor in under three seconds, while those in their 60s should aim for less than four seconds. Individuals in their 70s and 80s should aim for transition times of five and six seconds, respectively.

Exercises to End Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

Learn some exercises that can help treat and prevent ITBS

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is one of the top five injuries affecting runners. (1) The Iliotibial band (IT) is a frequent location that can suffer from overuse stress. The Iliotibial band (ITB) runs down the outside of the leg to the knee. The knee can be affected by both the hip and foot. In most cases of ITBS patients have weakness in the Gluteus Medius and Maximus on the affected side. To treat ITBS effective you most both address the inflammation in the ITB and the weakness that occurring in the hips. Another helpful component is to address running form or the other actives that aggravates it.

Hypertonicity or overdevelopment of the TFL and not having the Glutes function optimally can cause ITBS. ITBS is common in long distance runners when they are fatigue and the hip muscle become tired. Once tired they no longer control the IT correctly. Causing extra loading of the IT and then to leading to it break down.

The knee is a slave to the hip and foot. Research confirms that strengthening the glutes will correct this imbalance and reduce symptoms of ITBS. When patients who incorporate hip abductor strengthening into their ITBS rehab will experience symptom resolution within six weeks. (5,6)

Another important thing to do If you’re having knee pain related to running, is to have your running gait evaluated. I Like to video tape the patient running in slow motion. Must phone have a great slow Mo setting. This make it easy to see if there is anything that could be contributing to their symptoms. Running with a “crossover” gait, can aggravate or injury the iliotibial band, hips, knee as well as the feet.

Two More Studies Confirm Most Disc Herniations Resorb

Great news Disc Herniations can resorb.

The body has amazing healing capabilities.  I have seen many people get better when they were told that they would need surgery.  It great to see the research showing the same thing I have seen over the years of treating patients.

“The existing evidence shows that the overall resorption incidence of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) was 70.39%, the resorption incidence of ruptured LDH is higher than that of contained LDH. The resorption process mainly occurred within 6 months of conservative treatment."

The possibility of Spontaneous regression was:"

  • Bulging disc - 13.3%
  • Protruded disc- 52.5%
  • Extruded disc- 70.4%
  • Sequestered disc- 93.9%

Extruded and sequestered discs were also significantly more likely to completely regress than smaller morphologies."

The Importance of Exercise as We Age

We all know that exercise is crucial to staying healthy and living longer. As we age, we tend to slow down more and become sedentary. Sometimes that can be due to health problems, weight gain, or pain issues – other times it can be because we become increasingly worried about falling and sustaining an injury.

However, countless studies prove the health benefits associated with physical activity, and how these become even more important as we age. Going for a brisk walk, a jog, or even a gym workout a couple of days a week helps improve mental and physical health, both of which will help you maintain your independence as you age. And the good news is, it is never too late to start! 

Below, I have outlined some of the most common benefits of physical activity as we get older.

Helps prevent or delay diseases

Regular physical activity can help prevent a large number of the most common health conditions, like diabetes and heart disease. Overall, it helps improve your immune function, which becomes increasingly more important as we head into middle age. As little as a walk in the park a couple of days a week significantly increases your ability to manage or delay potential issues.

Lowers the risk of falling

As we age, our bodies weaken. An excellent way to stay active and keep your independence as you age is to build muscles and exercise. With regular exercise comes improved flexibility and balance, as well as quicker recovery time if you do fall or sustain an injury.

Helps loss or maintain weight

When we reach 40, our metabolism naturally starts slowing down. We have to work harder, and smarter, to keep the weight. Physical activity builds muscles and burns calories to help you maintain a healthy weight as you age.

Improves bone density

Get those walking shoes on and start walking! Walking and jogging are both weight-bearing activities that can help you increase the strength in your bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. 

Improves your mental health

Why do we always feel so much better after exercising? Well, it is because our body produces endorphins when we engage in physical activity, which in turn reduces our stress levels and leaves us feeling happier and healthier. Physical activity has also been linked to better sleep, another factor that is increasingly vital as we age.

Increases cognitive ability

Regular exercise helps improve and enhance your cognitive function as we age. In fact, there are plenty of studies that suggest that physical activity lowers the risk of dementia later in life.

Helps you stay social

Fitness is a great way to meet new people. Whether you join a gym, a walking group, or outdoor fitness classes, the chances are high you will find like-minded people to enjoy the activity with. As we age, it is vital to maintain an active social life to lower your risks of loneliness and depression. Find an exercise routine you like and enjoy it with friends!

TIPS TO LIGHTEN THE LOAD OF YOUR CHILD’S BACKPACK:

Limited the backpack weight.   A common recommendation weight limit of a backpack should be 15-20% of a child’s body weight. For example, if your child weighs 50 pounds, then the backpack should be no more than 10 pounds (Make certain that the weight in the backpack does not cause your child to lean forward. This is a sign that the backpack is too heavy)

Weight distribution. Once you have the correct weight in your child’s backpack make sure it is distributed evenly. Always pack heavy items at the bottom to ensure that the heaviest load is carried lower and closer to your child’s core area.

Make sure the backpack has padded shoulder straps. Wide, padded shoulder straps distribute weight evenly.

Tighten Up. Always adjust the straps so that the backpack fits close to the body but be careful they are not so tight they pull on the shoulders.

Use both shoulder straps. Carrying the backpack over one shoulder forces other back muscles to compensate for the uneven weight distribution, causing the spine to lean to the opposite side.

Placement. The rule of thumb is that the bottom of the backpack should be 2-3 inches above the waist, while the top of the backpack should be below the neck.

Select a backpack that has compartments to ensure better organization.   Organize your child’s backpack to use all of its compartments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. Go through the pack with your child weekly, and remove unneeded items to keep it light.

Safety. Place sharp or odd-shaped items in the front section of the backpack to avoid direct contact with your child’s back.

Lift with the legs. Make sure your child lifts the backpack using his or her leg muscles and avoids bending the back. Check out my YouTube channel for lifting tips.

Tips for walking better.

It’s almost summer and you know what that mean. Its walking outside season.

Today’s blog will be about tips to help improve walking and minimize the chance of injury. Walking can also be used for rehabilitation. We could use walking to help lower back pain as well as neck and upper back pain. One of my favorite authors Dr. Stu McGill uses this quote “walking is nature’s back balm”.

TIME

How much time should you start with, if you have not been walking or just starting out? I would start with 20 to 30 minutes. Once this time becomes comfortable and easy you can start to increase your time or distance. A good rule of thumb is 10%. Never increase time or distance more than 10% a week. If you hit a time or distance that is challenging you can stay at that time or distance for 4 weeks or until it becomes easy and then start increasing again.
In the beginning it might be helpful to wear a heart rate monitor so you can better judge effort. A good target heart rate to train at is: 180-(your age).  This heart rate is safe and it will not be pushing yourself to hard. This heart rate will be your zone 2 or fat burning zone.  Your muscles will be using fat for the vast majority of fuel during your training. This heart rate is also a heart rate which you could sustain for long periods of time.

Walking can also be used for rehabilitation. We could use walking to help lower back pain as well as neck and upper back pain. One of my favorite authors Stue McGill uses this quote “walking is nature’s back balm”.

Shoes

So let’s start from the ground up. Comfortable shoes or sneakers are important. So if you have a specific pair that works for you continue. If you’re going to buy a new pair. The most important tip is the shoe should feel Good and comfortable. So if you try the shoe on and walk around the store and it does not feel good this shoe will not work. On the other hand if you try a shoe on and it feels great. that shoe will work for your body. Studies have shown how the shoe feels is more important than other aspects such as stability or cushioning. So pick a shoe based on comfort. Once you have a good pair of shoes that works with your body make sure your shoes are tied. This will help prevent you from getting blisters or hotspots in your foot if you start walking for longer periods of time.

Stand up straight.


Good posture is important that only four sitting in front of the computer but also is important for most of our activities this will include walking. The vast majority of patients or people in today’s world sit too much. So walking is great way to improve one’s posture. Only if we walk with good posture will our posture improve. Chin up, shoulders back(no slouching). Head over shoulders, shoulders over hips.
