Laser Therapy

The latest in technology used for a therapeutic tissue response. Therapy will address the
reduction in symptoms such as pain and inflammation.

What Does Laser Therapy Do?

At the cellular level, therapeutic laser produces several clinically meaningful effects:

  • Reduces inflammation — Laser energy modulates the production of prostaglandins and other inflammatory cytokines, reducing the chronic inflammation that perpetuates pain in tendons and joints.
  • Accelerates tissue repair — Photobiomodulation stimulates fibroblast activity, collagen synthesis, and cellular regeneration, speeding the healing of injured soft tissue.
  • Reduces pain — Laser therapy raises the pain threshold in treated tissue by influencing nerve conduction and reducing the sensitization that makes chronic pain self-sustaining.
  • Improves microcirculation — Enhanced blood flow to injured tissue delivers oxygen and nutrients needed for healing.

These effects accumulate over a series of treatments, which is why laser therapy is typically delivered as a course of care rather than a single session.

What Is Therapeutic Laser Therapy?

Therapeutic laser — also called photobiomodulation or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) — uses specific wavelengths of light energy to penetrate into injured tissue and drive biological changes at the cellular level. Unlike surgical lasers that cut tissue, therapeutic lasers deliver energy that the cells absorb and convert into biochemical activity: accelerating mitochondrial function, reducing inflammatory mediators, and promoting tissue repair.

At Sikorsky Chiropractic, we use Class IV laser — the most clinically powerful therapeutic category — which delivers sufficient energy to treat deep tissue injuries in joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles that surface-level treatments cannot reach effectively.

Therapeutic Laser Biological Effects

  • Inflammation: One of the most popular benefits of cold laser therapy is that it can help reduce swelling and can treat edemas. An inflammation treatment can reduce swelling and alleviate any pain that inflammation may cause as it places additional pressure on surrounding nerves and tissues.
  • Sprains: Cold therapy is an effective treatment for sprains and other sports-related injuries. Low-level light therapy can improve blood flow to areas that have poor circulation, promoting a sprain to heal more quickly.
  • Strains: Common muscle and tissue strains can be improved with a low-level laser treatment. Cold therapy can help improve symptoms of a muscle strain, including potential swelling and acute pain.
  • Bursitis: Bursitis is a type of inflammation that affects fluid-filled pads that are meant to cushion your joints. Cold therapy can be an effective treatment to manage and improve the symptoms of bursitis.
  • Tendonitis: Cold therapy is a useful non-invasive treatment for tendonitis. Patients looking for relief without undergoing traditional surgery seek laser therapy to help with their tendonitis.
  • Arthritis pain: Low-level laser therapy is an effective way to manage pain associated with arthritic joints. Patients can find relief from arthritis and osteoarthritis pain with cold laser treatments.
  • Rapid Cell Growth: Laser light accelerates cellular reproduction and growth.
  • Faster Wound Healing: Laser light stimulates fibroblast development and accelerates collagen synthesis in damaged tissue.
  • Increased Metabolic Activity: Higher outputs of specific enzymes, greater oxygen and food particle loads for blood cells and thus greater production of the basic food source for cells, Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP).
  • Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation: Laser light reduces the formation of scar tissue following tissue damage from cuts, scratches, burns or post-surgery.
  • Increased Vascular Activity: Laser light induces temporary vasodilation increasing blood flow to damaged areas.
  • Stimulated Nerve Function: Slow recovery of nerve function in damaged tissue can result in “dead” limbs or numb areas

What to Expect During a Laser Therapy Session

Laser therapy sessions at Sikorsky Chiropractic are straightforward and comfortable. You will be positioned to expose the treatment area. The laser handpiece is moved slowly over the targeted area — you may feel a gentle warmth. Sessions typically last 5–15 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. There is no pain, no noise, and no recovery time afterward.

Both the provider and patient wear protective eyewear during treatment.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Acute conditions typically respond in 6–8 sessions. Chronic or more severe conditions may require 10–15 sessions for maximum benefit. Dr. Sikorsky will recommend a specific number of sessions based on your condition and reassess progress along the way.

Laser therapy is always integrated into a broader treatment plan at our clinic — not administered as a standalone service. It works best when combined with chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitative exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laser therapy safe?

Yes. Therapeutic laser has an excellent safety record with decades of research behind it. The primary precaution is protecting the eyes — both patient and provider wear protective eyewear during every session. It is contraindicated overactive malignancy, on the abdomen during pregnancy, and over certain implanted devices.

Will I feel anything during laser therapy?

Most patients feel a gentle warmth in the treated area. Some report a mild tingling. There is no discomfort. Some patients feel immediate relief following treatment; for others, improvement accumulates over a series of sessions.

Can I receive laser therapy if I have had surgery?

In most cases, yes — laser therapy is often used to support post-surgical healing. The specific circumstances of your surgery and implants will be reviewed to confirm suitability.

How does laser therapy differ from ultrasound therapy?

Both deliver energy to tissue through different mechanisms. Ultrasound uses sound waves; laser uses light. Class IV laser penetrates more deeply and has a stronger evidence base for tendinopathy and chronic inflammatory conditions than therapeutic ultrasound.

“I've been seeing Dr. Sikorsky for a month and a half now and I am thrilled with the results and the care I have received. Prior to seeing Dr. Sikorsky I had a consultation and visit with a different local office that left me feeling rather skeptical of chiropractic care. Thankfully Dr. Sikorsky has helped change my mind.

In addition to doing adjustments he thoroughly discusses the "why" and spends a lot of time on what I can do at home to get better (homework!).  The exercises he has shown me have been a game changer. They've helped me get better faster and changed the way I work out. I really appreciate that he focuses so much on form and strength. I'm almost a little sad that as I get better I won't have my weekly visits!” – J. Allmyer, Elgin, IL
