Acupuncture in Elgin, IL — Integrated Needle Therapy for Pain and Recovery

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a system of therapy originating in traditional Chinese medicine but now widely studied and applied in contemporary clinical settings. It involves the precise insertion of thin, sterile needles at specific anatomical points to influence the nervous system, reduce inflammation, relieve muscle tension, and support the body's natural healing mechanisms.

At Sikorsky Chiropractic, acupuncture is not offered as a standalone wellness service — it is integrated into your overall care plan as a clinical tool for specific conditions. Dr. Sikorsky selects acupuncture for patients whose presentations are likely to benefit from its particular effects: chronic pain, muscle spasm, joint inflammation, and headaches are among the most responsive conditions.

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of traditional Chinese medicine. It is over 3000 years old.  Today, acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners stimulate specific points on the body—by inserting thin needles into the skin.

What can Acupuncture treat?

Conditions Acupuncture Treats

Acupuncture has demonstrated clinical value for a broad range of musculoskeletal and pain-related conditions, including:

  • Chronic low back pain — One of the most well-studied applications, with consistent evidence for meaningful pain reduction.
  • Neck pain and cervicogenic headaches — Needle therapy targeting the upper cervical musculature can reduce both headache frequency and cervical muscle tension.
  • Shoulder pain and rotator cuff conditions — Reduces local inflammation and muscle guarding that limits shoulder mobility.
  • Joint pain from arthritis — Helps modulate pain signaling and reduce inflammatory cytokines in affected joints.
  • Muscle tension and trigger points — "Dry needling" technique is highly effective for releasing myofascial trigger points in the neck, upper back, and hips.
  • Hip and knee pain — Useful as a complement to joint rehabilitation for inflammatory and degenerative presentations.

What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Session

Many patients who have never received acupuncture are surprised by how comfortable the experience is. The needles used are hair-thin. Insertion is typically felt as a mild pressure, tingling, or dull ache at the needle site, which usually fades within seconds.

During your session: Dr. Sikorsky will review your condition and determine which points are appropriate. You will lie comfortably on the treatment table. Needles are inserted and retained for approximately 20–30 minutes. Most patients feel a sense of relaxation, and some experience immediate relief in the treated area.

After the session, you may notice mild soreness at needle sites for 24–48 hours — similar to post-massage soreness. This is normal.

How Acupuncture Integrates With Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic adjustments address joint mechanics. Acupuncture addresses the soft-tissue and neurological environment around those joints. Used together, they create a more complete treatment effect — the adjustment restores mobility while acupuncture reduces the muscle tension and inflammation that would otherwise cause the joint to return to dysfunction.

For patients with chronic pain, the combination of spinal manipulation and acupuncture has been shown to produce better outcomes than either therapy alone.

Visit Frequency and Safety

Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a trained provider using sterile, single-use needles. Side effects are minimal and typically limited to mild local soreness.

Visit frequency depends on the condition being treated. Acute conditions may benefit from 2 sessions per week initially; chronic conditions typically begin at 1–2 sessions per week and taper as improvement is established. Most patients see meaningful improvement within 6–10 sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most patients describe very little discomfort. The needles are much finer than medical needles and are inserted quickly. You may feel a brief pressure or tingling sensation, but the treatment itself is generally comfortable — many patients fall asleep during sessions.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, when performed by a trained and licensed provider using single-use sterile needles. Serious adverse events from acupuncture are extremely rare. Dr. Sikorsky screens for contraindications before treatment.

How is acupuncture at a chiropractic clinic different from a standalone acupuncture practice?

At Sikorsky Chiropractic, acupuncture is integrated into a comprehensive musculoskeletal treatment plan. It is used in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitation — not as an isolated therapy.

Will insurance cover acupuncture?

Some insurance plans cover acupuncture, particularly for low back pain. Coverage varies widely by plan. Our office will verify your benefits and explain your coverage before treatment begins.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture increases and restores blood flow to the affected areas of the body to promote the healing process.

It activates the brain through nerve pathways triggering the release of internal chemicals, such as endorphins and enkephalins, which have remarkable pain-relieving properties. It reduces inflammation, relaxes the nervous & muscular system, and regulates the body’s hormonal and immune systems.

What can I expect at an Acupuncture session?

A typical Acupuncture session lasts 20-30 minutes. Usually, a series of treatments are necessary to resolve a condition. Acute conditions can take anywhere from 6 – 10 treatments, while more chronic cases can take around 4 – 6 months of treatment.
